The True Story of the Sword in the Stone
“Whosoever pulls the sword from the stone will rightfully be king!”
Such was the prophecy. After all the best people tried and failed, Kay’s squire, Arthur, effortlessly pulled the sword from the stone. Declaring the ignoble teenager to be king was, of course, out of the question, and the nobles declared the prophecy to be regrettably false. They held a wrestling tournament, instead.
Sir Kay won. Before Kay could claim the crown, however, Arthur cut off his head with his newly won sword.
They crowned Arthur king. Prophecies are prophecies, and Arthur was, everyone agreed, quite handy with the sword.
Justice has been served.
Of course, since Arthur was a bastard, in both meanings of the word, they might still have rejected him if they had known...
But think of Guillaume le bâtard!
The tales were invented after that...
They would have rejected him because he was not his father's son. They didn't care how kings behaved.🤭
